Importanceof Sound in Movies

Watchinga movie is perhaps one of the ways in which people spend theirleisure. However, sound is very crucial in every movie that ispurposed to convey an important message. There are movies that cangive a rough idea of at least what is happening. A good example ofsuch a movie is action movies. Despite the sound from the movie ofeither the background or the actors speaking, one can have a hint ofwhat is happening (Rubin,1928).For instances such as the Chinese movies, most of them are actionoriented and the actors speaks Chinese which is a foreign language tomany audiences. These audience will however have a rough idea of whatis happening for instance when a kid from a certain family isabducted, the clip is good enough to explain the scene. There areother movies that cannot do without sound. Examples of such moviesare the romantic movies and also dramas. Romantic movies are playedpurposely to express ones feeling to the audience and also to fellowcharacters. However such movies cannot do well without any sound. Thefilmmaker should instead employ the use of words highlighting at thebottom of the screen. Highlighting words spoken by the actors willhowever enable the audience to read and understand what is being saidin the movies. Another option is to create a small window on the sideof the screen for a person to be communicating using sign language. This method is however not convenient since it will require a lot oftime and also a lot of money. Beside all that, not all people arefamiliar with the sign language and thus not applicable to them(Hoppenstand,2008).

Thethree movies that is first and furious 6, Tron Legacy Light bikescene and Oceans Twelve Laser Dance have a different image in bothviewing with sound an d without sound. To start with first andfurious 6 without sound, some of the information are read from theactors’ actions such as when they are angry they portray an angryfacial expression. However there is also loss of some of theinformation. An example, when someone starts a car, the sound throughwhich the car starts and accelerates indicates that someone is in arush. However when there is no sound, this information does not reachthe audience since he will view the scene as a normal car start.Movies such as Legacy Light bike scene portray the same informationwhether with sound or not. It is so because similar movies such ascar racing, one needs not to hear sound for him/her to know which carwins in the race (Stein,2005).However it’s only the sense of sight that is required for one toknow which car wins by seeing the car that finishes first in thecross line. Movies such as skating skills do not necessarily requiresound for you to learn the skills. You are only required to pay youinsight attention to the screen for you to lean the skating skills. There are however some movies, which necessarily require sound. Forinstance the dance movies, one need to hear the song being danced toand whether the dancers are dancing to the tone of the song or justmaking unnecessary moves. Movies such as the laser 12 ocean dancerequires sound for the audience to know the type of song being dancedto. Though the facial expression tells whether it’s a happy or amourning song, some song might be danced ironically for the purposeof the movie(Paul,2003).Horrormovies are types of movies that rely on sound to make audience feel acertain way. The main purpose of horror movie is to create a scaryenvironment. The booming sound in horror movies prepares the audiencefor a bad thing to happen to the actor. Imagine such a scenario withno sound? How would the movie be? The movie would be boring insteadsince most audiences are moved by the booming sounds. The sound inhorror movies prepares the audience to what is about to happen andhow they should react. When the movie makers decide to use wordhighlight instead of sound, it will also not convey the informationor the feeling since the audience will only read the type of soundproduced, whether they are steps at night or dog barks but will notfeel anything since it would be just imagination(Pye&amp Barr, 2000).Zombieland and Shaun of death should however be categorized as horrormovies. According to my point of view, these movies create a scaryenvironment and in normal cases, it is known that horrors are scary. Many science fiction films are set in a feature that is scaring andoppressive. These films are in line with horror movies. In order tobreak the mold in these type of films, I would change any scarysounds in the movie and also use characters that are audiencefriendly and not scary(Rubin,1928).ReferencesHoppenstand,G.
