TheEffect of Parenting Styles on Child Attachment
TheEffect of Parenting Styles on Child Attachment
Manyfamilies plan for the upbringing and education needs of theirchildren, while giving limited attention to the parenting style theyuse to address different issues affecting their children. Parentsoften forget that parent styles have a direct association with howtheir children will grow, live, and abide by the law (Gallet, 2014).Different parenting styles differ in the discipline strategies, maturity expectations, communication skills, and parents’nurturance. This implies parents influence the behavior, delinquency, school competence, self-perception, sexual activity, and the child’stendency to use substances in adulthood. Although parenting stylesare critical to the child’s development, the popular media giveincomplete advice to its audience. This paper will analyze a popularmedia article entitled “Different parenting styles” published inthe Child Magazine in 2014. The paper will also compare the contentof the popular media article with the content of a research article“The effect of parenting style of parents on the attachment styleof undergraduate students”.
of the popular article
Thearticle “Different parenting styles” provide pieces of advice toparents on various styles of parenting and the impact they have onchildren. Gallet (2014) attributes parenting stress that parentsexperience when bringing up their children to both the conscious aswell as the unconscious expectations that they have for themselves. In addition, many people enter into parenthood before assessing theirparenting values, roles, and responsibilities. Consequently, parentsshift from one parenting style to another without considering theeffect of their conduct on the personality development of theirchildren. In essence, Gallet (2014) identifies that individuals’perception about how children should be brought up can be shaped bypersonal values, personality, childhood experience, emotionalfactors, and trial and error. Some of the parenting styles availableto parents include authoritative, permissive, authoritarian, attachment, and conscious parenting.
Comparingthe content of the two articles
Thecontent of the popular article and the research article are similarin three ways. First, the authors of the two articles agree that thedisagreement among parents, especially on the best parenting stylehave negative effects on children. Gallet (2014) explains this withan example of two parents where the mother believes in the attachmentparenting style, while the father adopts the authoritative style. Theissue of selecting the most appropriate discipline style subjectstheir marriage to regular conflicts, which culminates in children’sconfusion. Akhtar (2012) on the other hand, asserts that children ofparents with an unhappy marriage often development attachmentsproblems, which affected their ability to relate with other people. This implies that both parents should play a role in deciding theparent style that is appropriate for their children.
Secondly, the two articles indicate that authoritarian parenting style isinappropriate for bring up children. Parents who adopt authoritarianstyle set strict boundaries and many rules for their children tofollow (Gallet, 2014). Parents of authoritarian parents are not givenan opportunity to air their opinion or make any input. Similarly,Akhtar (2012) asserts that the authoritarian style results in thedevelopment of avoidant and anxious attachment among the children ofauthoritarian parents. This implies that children who are brought upby authoritarian parents tend to avoid socializing with other peopleand tend to become more apprehensive about different issue of lifemore than children brought up using appropriate styles, such asauthoritative. In addition, the research article indicates thatchildren who are brought up using the authoritarian style are at ahigh risk of developing extreme attitudes compared to other children.
Third, the two articles indicate that permissive parenting can give a roomfor children to develop negative behaviors. This is because parentswho adopt permissive style do not set boundaries or rules that guidetheir children on how they should behave. Gallet (2014) gives anexample of Grace, a mother of two boys who uses the permissive style. The boys take advantage of her weak style play the two parents off.Permissive parenting results in the development of anxious andavoidance attachment among the affected children. Therefore, the twoarticles seem to warn parents from adopting permissive style ofparenting.
Piecesof information that should be added to the popular article
Thereare two pieces of information that the authors of the popular articleshould integrate in its content. First, the popular article shouldaddress the relationship between parenting style and the age ofchildren. For example, it would be necessary determine if the impactof parenting style on adolescents and young children differs.Secondly, the popular article should address relationship betweenparenting style are psycho-social development of children. This meansthat the authors of the popular article and assess the relationshipbetween parent styles and the psychological as well as the socialdevelopment of children in different age groups.
Parentsshould be careful when selecting the parenting style they use tobring up their children. Both the research and the popular articlesare in agreement that the authoritative and permissive parentingstyles are inappropriate because they result in the development ofanxious and avoidant attachment. The authoritarian style seems to bethe best style proposed by authors of the two articles. However, thepopular article should address the relationship between parentingstyle and the age of children as well as the psycho-socialdevelopment.
